Over time, a sliding door may start to become difficult to open and close because it has not been properly maintained. If you notice that your door is not sliding smoothly, there are a few things that you can do to ensure that the door slides smoothly again. The following guide walks you through a few things you can do to make your sliding door slide as smoothly as possible.
Check the Tracks of the Door
Sliding doors slide on rollers that move on tracks. You want to be sure that the tracks are always clean. Dirt, pet hair, and leaves can collect on the track as animals or people enter in and out of your home. Use a toothbrush to carefully scrub into the cracks and crevices of the track and then use a small hand vacuum to suck up any debris on the track.
Lubricate the Rollers
The rollers that are attached to the door can become jammed overtime if they are not well lubricated. Since taking the door off of the track is way too difficult to do, add lubrication to the track and then open and close the door to lubricate the rollers. You need to use a spray lubricant to ensure you can apply the lubricant precisely so you do not damage carpeting located near the door.
Adjust the Mounting Screw of the Door
There are times when the door may not be level. When this happens, the door may jam and start to jerk as you try to open and close it. Look closely at the door to find a screw on the side of the door. If you notice that the side of the door with the screw is higher than the other side of the door, turn the screw in a counterclockwise direction. This will lower that side of the door. If you notice that the side of the door opposite the screw is higher than the side with the screw, have someone hold the door in place firmly so that you can easily turn the crew clockwise to tighten the screw. This will cause the door to lift slightly on the side of the door that is too low.
Once you have tried all of these fixes, the door should open and close with ease again. You need to be sure to lubricate the rollers and clean the track on a regular basis to keep the door sliding as easily as possible at all times.
